Nightphotography Physical Workshop

Learn basic skills on how to photograph at night regarding camera settings, choice of location, starry skies, northern lights and even what to do in cloudy weather.

We will take a guided tour to a beautiful location, where you will get practical help with your camera set-up.

Turn darkness into mood

The deep and dark winters are one of the unique features of the nordic nature. The Scandinavian winter has so much to offer and even in the darkness, there is beauty.

Photography is always about finding the light, because in the end, that’s what the sensors in our cameras perceive. Even at night there are different sources of light, but they are much harder to find and much weaker than during the day. In this workshop we will cover the basics on how to make the light nights offer visible on camera.

We will cover

  • the 3 most important settings in your camera

  • choosing the right location for your photo

  • how different phenomena can impact different settings

  • effects of editing

If skies are clear we will have a look at the most significant seasonal star constellations and if we are extra lucky we might get to see some northern lights.

The entire activity will be held outdoors, so prepare with adequate clothing for several hours outdoors in nordic autumn/winter weather.

In addition you will need:

  • a digital camera (I recommend one with the ability to shoot in RAW file format for higher resolution and more options in editing)

  • a wide angle lens (my recommendation is 30mm or below, the lower the better)

  • a tripod

  • a headlamp

It can be neat to have a way to remotely control your camera, but it’s not necessary to take part in the activities and try-outs.
